多氯联苯曾经在大规模的工业建设中发挥着重要作用，由于其性质稳定，长期被广泛用于各生产领域。
多氯联苯几乎不溶于水，一旦自然水体受到其污染，便会产生长远影响。另外，大部分多氯联苯最终都被沉积物吸附，因此沉积物是其主要的环境归宿。再有，它还可能通过饮水途径对居民产生致癌风险。
尽管多氯联苯带来的危害目前已经被注意到，但对于一些性质相似的污染物仍需保持警惕，最终消除它们的持续性伤害。
