Tengelmann Group has sold its supermarket subsidiary Kaiser's Tengelmann to Edeka. The 451 branches are to change hands on June 30, 2015. The deal still needs to be approved by Germany's Federal Cartel Office. This summer, Tengelmann had announced that its supermarket business, which has been in the red for years, was to undergo a thorough analysis. “The result of the analysis was painfully clear,” said managing partner Karl-Erivan W. Haub. Unfortunately, he no longer sees any way to make the supermarkets, which have nearly 16,000 employees, a profitable company. “With a market share of only 0.6%, our supermarkets are too small to give us a chance on the market.”
