A California Senate bill that would mandate warning labels on sugary beverages was put on hold Monday over concerns about the cost of implementing the legislation.
In a 6-0 vote, the Senate Appropriations Committee referred bill S.B. 1000 to its suspense file, meaning it will be reconsidered after the state budget has been prepared.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Bill Monning last month, would place the following warning label on the front of all beverage containers with added sweeteners that have 75 or more calories per 12 ounces: “STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.”
It would impact hundreds of beverages including soda, fruit juice, teas and soy/almond/rice milks (though animal milk-based beverages would be exempt)。
